CHAPTER 00: About AP Psychology
AP Psychology is a college-level introduction to the scientific study of behavior and mental processes. The revised course is built around five units: biological bases of behavior, cognition, development and learning, social psychology and personality, and mental and physical health. Across those units, students practice applying concepts, evaluating research methods, interpreting data, and building evidence-based arguments.
This opening chapter is your map. It explains what the course asks you to know, how the exam is organized, and how to study in a way that matches the College Board framework. Treat it as the dashboard for the rest of the book: when a later chapter feels crowded, come back here to remember what the exam is really measuring.
Where This Course Can Take You
Maya is a fictional student who likes biology, debate, and the way people make decisions under pressure. At first, AP Psychology looks like a list of terms. Then she notices the pattern: every chapter asks her to explain behavior with evidence. In one week, she connects neurons to sleep, memory to study habits, and social influence to the way a team makes choices. By spring, she is not just memorizing definitions. She is asking better questions: What counts as evidence? Could a study be replicated? Does a graph support the claim? Which psychological concept best explains the behavior?
That habit travels. It helps in neuroscience, education, marketing, medicine, law, public health, design, counseling, and data work. AP Psychology does not train you to diagnose people, and it is not a substitute for professional care. It does train you to think more carefully about claims people make about the mind.

Psychology at Work
Rafi is a fictional user-experience researcher at a language-learning company. His team wants to know why some students quit after one week while others keep practicing for months. Rafi does not guess from vibes. He designs surveys, compares practice data, interviews students, and checks whether motivation, memory, reinforcement, and social support help explain the pattern. His work is psychological because it connects behavior and mental processes to evidence.
