About this book

This course book is written for students taking AP Biology and follows all eight units of the course. An opening chapter explains what AP Biology studies, the exam format, the eight-unit course map and the science practices, and ends with a diagnostic check.

The early chapters build from the chemistry of life (water, carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids and proteins) to cells, membranes and transport, and then to cellular energetics: enzymes, photosynthesis and cellular respiration. Cell Communication and Cell Cycle covers signal transduction, feedback and the regulation of the cell cycle, and Heredity covers meiosis and Mendelian and non-Mendelian genetics.

Gene Expression and Regulation moves from DNA replication through transcription, translation, mutations and biotechnology. Natural Selection covers population genetics, Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, the evidence for evolution, phylogeny and speciation, and Ecology covers energy flow, populations, communities and biodiversity. Every chapter closes with a revision summary and multiple-choice and free-response revision.

CHAPTER 00: About AP Biology

AP Biology is a college-level course about how living systems store information, use energy, interact with environments, and change over time. The 2027 exam framework used in this book follows the College Board AP Biology Course and Exam Description effective Fall 2025, plus the clarifications and corrections implemented through June 2026.

This introduction is your map for the whole book. It explains the exam, the units, the science practices, and the way VerityPrep questions are built. The main theme is simple: AP Biology rewards students who can use evidence, models, data, and mechanisms.

Every question in this book is original and written for the current exam. When a question refers to a table, graph, or model, that table, graph, or model is printed inside the question, exactly as it will be on exam day.

00.1 What AP Biology Studies

00.1 What AP Biology Studies

AP Biology studies living systems at multiple scales: molecules, cells, organisms, populations, communities, and ecosystems. The course is not a list of disconnected facts. It asks how structure supports function, how information is stored and expressed, how energy and matter move through systems, and how evolution explains both unity and diversity.

🦉 Snow Owl (Strategist): When you learn a term, attach it to a question: What does it do? What evidence would show it? What changes if it is disrupted?
Big ideaStudent-friendly meaningAP habit
Structure and functionBiological parts work because of their shapes, chemical properties, and interactions.Connect a feature to an outcome.
Energy and matterCells and ecosystems transform energy and cycle matter.Trace inputs, outputs, and limits.
InformationDNA, RNA, proteins, signals, and behavior help systems respond and reproduce.Follow information flow and regulation.
EvolutionPopulations change over generations through mechanisms such as natural selection.Use evidence and avoid need-based explanations.

00.2 The Exam Format

00.2 The Exam Format

The AP Biology exam is a hybrid digital exam. You read every question in the Bluebook app, answer the multiple-choice questions there, and handwrite your free-response answers in a paper booklet. An approved calculator and the official AP Biology reference sheet of equations and formulas are allowed.

SectionFormatTimingWeight
Section I60 multiple-choice questions (A-D). Some are discrete; others come in sets of about 4 to 5 questions that share one graph, table, model, or experiment.90 minutes50%
Section II6 free-response questions: 2 long questions (9 points each) and 4 short-answer questions (4 points each)90 minutes50%
The AP Biology exam at a glance

Exam at a glance. Section I gives you about 1.5 minutes per question. In Section II, a practical budget is about 25 minutes for each long question and about 10 minutes for each short question.
